The 3 Types of Points (And Which One You Should Start With)
There are three main types of travel rewards:
1. Bank Points (Best for Beginners)
Examples: Chase Ultimate Rewards, Amex Membership Rewards, Capital One Miles, Citi ThankYou points
Why they’re powerful:
Flexible (can be used with many airlines & hotels)
Often transferable to partners
Great for both beginners and advanced travelers
Best for:
People who want flexibility and don’t want to lock themselves into one airline or hotel.
2. Airline Miles
Examples: Delta SkyMiles, American AAdvantage, United MileagePlus
Pros:
Can unlock amazing flight deals
Great for frequent flyers of one airline
Cons:
Less flexible
Can be hard to use during peak travel times
Best for:
Travelers loyal to one airline or hub city.
3. Hotel Points
Examples: Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton
Pros:
Free nights add up fast
Great for longer stays
Often easier redemptions than flights
Cons:
Usually less flexible than bank points
Best for:
Travelers who value free hotel stays or luxury upgrades.

Quick Win: Start With Bank Points
If you’re just starting out, bank points are your best friend.
Why? Because they give you options.
One set of points → multiple airlines → multiple hotels → better deals.
Once you’re comfortable, then you can layer in airline or hotel loyalty.
