Most people don’t lose value with points because they’re bad at math. They lose value because of small, avoidable mistakes that quietly erase rewards over time. Today, we’ll cover the biggest ones so you don’t repeat them.

Mistake #1: Carrying a Balance “Just Once”
This is the fastest way to make points worthless. One month of interest can easily cost more than the value of the points you earned.
Rule:
If you can’t pay it off in full, points should not be the reason you swipe.
Mistake #2: Letting Points Expire
Some airline and hotel programs quietly expire points after inactivity. People lose thousands of points every year without realizing it.
Easy fix:
A small activity (shopping portal, dining program, or transfer) usually resets the clock.
Set a reminder once a year. Seriously.

Mistake #3: Hoarding Points With No Plan
Points are not an investment. They don’t earn interest and programs can devalue them.
If you’re saving “just because,” you’re taking unnecessary risk. Have at least a rough travel goal in mind.

Mistake #4: Using Points for Low-Value Redemptions
Gift cards, merchandise, and random portal “deals” almost always give poor value.
Reminder from Issue #1:
Flights and hotels usually deliver 2–5x more value than cash-style redemptions.

Mistake #5: Overcomplicating Your Setup Too Early
More cards ≠ better strategy.
Many beginners open too many cards too fast and lose track of:
Annual fees
Due dates
Bonus requirements
Simple beats fancy.
The Safe Strategy to Follow
To avoid all of the above:
Pay balances in full
Track point expiration once a year
Earn points with a goal in mind
Redeem for travel, not stuff
Keep your setup simple until you’re confident
Do this, and you’re already ahead of 90% of people.
